What is onychomycosis?
ОOnychomycosis is a type of fungal infection. In particular, it is infection that affects the nails as a result of fungi.
Nonetheless, fungal infections are common in nails, especially toenails.
That is why it is essential to have a microbiological diagnosis to confirm suspicions before starting treatment on your own. In fact, it is always recommended to consult a doctor before taking any action. After all, not all cases require the same treatment and not all antifungal medicines are exempt from causing unwanted side effects.
Treatment for onychomycosis
After having collected a sample of the affected tissue (usually through a simple scraping) and having made a diagnosis that confirms that it is onychomycosis, your doctor will be the one to decide if a topical or systemic treatment will suffice.
The topical treatment is applied via nail polish. The systemic treatment, on the other hand, will only be prescribed when the first treatment has failed and the intervention of oral medication is necessary.

Prevention of onychomycosis
The methods to prevent both onychomycosis and any other nail fungal infection are very simple to follow. Fungi develop in humid, warm, and enclosed areas, so be especially careful in sports facilities, campgrounds, etc., particularly in showers and swimming pools. Wearing flip-flops will prevent any unwanted contagion in these cases.
Also, drying your body well with special emphasis on the recesses between the fingers and toes will also make it difficult to appear.
Wearing breathable clothing as well as shoes that let the foot breathe will keep your skin dry and ventilated and prevent sweat and moisture from accumulating. The use of talcum powder is also highly recommended.
Of course, avoid sharing shoes, towels, or clothing with other people at all costs. Fungi can be transmitted from one person to another with surprising speed. Finally, keeping the skin moisturised is also a very good recommendation.
